Thank you. I love all the regional differences, so thanks for sharing!
( Log Out / The lifespan of a June bug is typically no more than four years. Now imagine two people from different areas discussing the aquatic insects that live in or on their farm ponds over the phone.
Most people know that most living organisms have more than one name.
When my grandfather described someone who would be answerable for a misdeed, he would say that would happen “like a duck on a june bug. ), but depending on whether you (or your parents) grew up there or somewhere else, which one you call a June bug can vary. Also, I never knew people considered “potato bugs” to be June bugs! My mom’s June bug is very different from both my June bug and my dad’s June bug because she grew up in yet another place. I guess scarab is a common name, too, even though it’s derived from it’s family name? I think it’s good for people to be aware of that. Interesting!
I’ve moved to North Carolina in the last few months and am really enjoying all the nitida flying around the area where I’m working. I lived in Ohio most of my life and I was told that the brown beatles were June bugs. I’d been told what these insects were upon arriving in West Texas, but didn’t know too much more than that about the hapless things as they zinged into the lights I leave on at night outside the house. It's a different insect all together and it makes a long loud whine sound. Always loved doing it, though I don’t think I ever accidentally amputated a leg either…. I moved to Virginia 2 years ago and my boyfriend and I have had an ongoing disagreement about what a June bug really is. Hi Dr Dragonfly!
:). I live in central Ca, and every June, my front porch is littered with dying bugs that I have called Junebugs. We grew up calling the Japanese beetle June bugs…. They also were the same in California.
If not, something else.
I want to see how long it will survive if given proper living conditions. Yep, Tucson definitely has both (I wrote the post in Tucson actually! All Bug Sounds in both Wav and MP3 formats Here are the sounds that have been tagged with Bug free from SoundBible.com. i know they make a bbbzzz sound, but i meen like a tick tick crackle crackle clap clap clap sound?
Interesting!
Now I want to use it – and I currently live in the southeast, so it feels like the right kind of thing to use in these parts. Maybe they both like the gerrids best, the long-legged bugs that live on the surface of the water.
I’ve been in Tucson 3 summers and this is the first year my house has been covered with these reddish-brown beetle-like bugs. I live in maine and we get them so thick sometimes the whole screen door will be covered at night and you’ll have to open and run in and try not to get one in your hair ugh in maine they’re dark brown. I found this while looking up a smaller version of the June Bug which I found out (in this blog) is a Figeater Beetle. They fly like drunks into an around the eaves of the houses in my neighborhood, but only the houses facing the wetlands/drainage area south of the development.
